There is so much pressure on parents these days to make the first or last day of school so fun or magical for the kids! I don’t necessarily agree with all the effort. On the same note, though, I love to have fun with the kids! They are only young once! I do find that when the weather is nice and sunny, I am more inclined to try to do something a little more unique to commemorate that last day!
If you don’t want to do much but still want to do something for the last day of school, I have a couple of simple fun ideas below.
You could take them to their favourite restaurant. Especially if you don’t eat out much. It can be a very special treat to go out and get some delicious food! Or maybe even just a really fancy dessert!
Speaking of desserts, you could also just take them out for ice cream. Even if it’s something you may typically do over the course of the summer, they will love the freedom feeling and the promise of summer!
Get a bunch of chalk! Use the driveway as your canvas to write about the kids’ favourite memories from the school year! Have them draw pictures of them doing the things they loved most!
Grab some special snacks and have a movie night! This is especially great if it’s a rainy last day. You could even take it up a notch and go to the movie theatre or even step it up further and hit up a drive-in!
Plan a sleepover with a friend. Chat with the parents of your kids’ friends and plan a sleepover to kick off the summer!
If your kid is younger and you want to really go out with a bang, show up at the school with a cooler of freezes for the kids and their class or friends! Let them play at the school for a bit while they enjoy the cold treat!
One thing I have been wanting to do for so long, and have just been waiting for the kids to get bigger and more independent – is to set up a water balloon bucket at the front of the house somewhere with a note that says something like “Here’s yours! I am in the backyard with mine. Come find me! Good luck!” How fun would that be on a super hot day in June!?
Just because there may be a lot of pressure around making the last day of school a totally unique and magical experience, it doesn’t have to be a super grandiose type of experience. Sometimes, easy and simple, creates the best memories!
