Decluttering is not the same for everyone. Everyone starts with different items, different amounts of items, different amounts of energy or motivation, and different amounts of time to use for decluttering.
There are so many ideas out there for ‘how to declutter’. It seems like every magazine or decluttering expert uses a different approach and obviously thinks their way is the best way – probably because it worked wonders for them!
It’s one of the reasons why I personally think a total house purge is the way to go.
The problem with all of this, though, is that not everyone is the same or benefits from the same process.
Decluttering, or finding what method truly works for you, is a personal journey. Eventually, you have to do it. In some capacity. Whether you do it bit by bit or the whole house at once. Whether you do it alone or drag in your friends to do it with you.
You can look up all the ways to declutter or all the tips from the pros, but eventually, you just need to do it.
As you get started, you will find your grove, and that will lead to you finding the way that works best for you!
Maybe you would be way too overwhelmed to do the whole house in a week. Maybe time will not allow that for you. Maybe you would find it too painstakingly slow to do it bit by bit. Maybe you need to do it room by room and make a literal mess in each room as you go.
Whatever methods you try, if it doesn’t work, try something else. OR, if it DOES work, stick with it!
Just because one method worked for your friend or one way is talked about in every book about decluttering doesn’t mean anything for how you are supposed to declutter your own stuff. At the end of the day, you simply need less stuff in your house, from one day to the next.
Decluttering is simply about finding a way that you can use your house and your stuff in a way that makes you feel proud of yourself and your time. That’s it.
So, use what works. Don’t reinvent the wheel if what you’re doing is working. If it’s not working for you, try another method.
Just get the stuff you no longer need gone! It kind of is that simple.
