Declutter using stickers

The holiday season is fast approaching, and with it comes the hosting and entertaining. Take some time before December to go through the kitchen and all of its gear to see what you actually use and what you could stand to get rid of.

The trick to seeing what you actually use is to put a sticker on EVERYTHING! Plaster everything in your kitchen with a sticker!

You can use a simple coloured dot or star, or you can even use a piece of scotch tape. Just mark everything with some kind of removeable sticker.

Here’s where the magic happens…

Every time that you use something with a sticker on it, remove the sticker!

Crazy simple right!? So, assign yourself a timeline. Maybe you want to see what you use over the course of November. Maybe your timeline can be longer, and you will re-assess in six months or a year. Whatever you decide, when your timeline comes to its end, look through your kitchen for anything that still has a sticker on it. If it has a sticker, it means that the item has not been used in the last month, six months or a year!

It gives you a very clear visual of what items you are actually using, which provides you with the decluttering decision making power to get rid of everything that you don’t really use!

If your timeline is short, you may not have a great picture of what you truly still need. But if you can clear out a few things before entertaining season gets underway, then you can prioritize where you want to move some of your items to give you quick and easy access to the items you use most.

Go grab your stickers. Put them on small appliances, pots, pans, and even some of the cooking tools and utensils, like spatulas, lemon ballers, and peelers! Put it on your serving platters and coffee cups. You could even put stickers on some of your spices. Again, every time you use something, remove the sticker!

See how many items you actually use! You may think you need all those gadgets until you realize how infrequently you pull them out!

Thanks for coming home!
