The easiest way to make sure that your main living areas stay tidy and organized is to have a home for everything! I bet you’ve heard that line before!
Well, the easiest way to have a home for everything comes from having an easy to use and easy to access storage space. Spend some time this week thinking about your storage spaces, think about what is kept there, and how easy it is to access everything. Check for things you no longer need. Look at piles of stuff that are about to topple over. See if anything is broken. Are you using your space effectively? Do you have any empty bins? Overflowing bins?
Use this week to take a quick peak into all of your storage bins. (As a bonus, take some time to pull out your Christmas bins to set up some of decorations – if you haven’t already done so!) Challenge yourself to find two things from every bin or storage shelf to get rid of.
To ensure that everyone can use the storage spaces effectively, label everything! Label shelves, bins, boxes! Make sure that there is no question about what goes where!
Another thing you can do to ensure your storage spaces are easy to use is to put the most frequently used items towards the front or at eye level of the space. If you use something daily that is supposed to go on a top shelf just out of reach, what are the chances you will actually put it away every day? It might actually end up being the next thing you trip on because now it’s on the floor in front of where it’s supposed to go!
Lastly, try to avoid placing items in front of or on top of other items. Easier said than done if you have limited storage space for what you’re storing! The less stuff you have to move around to access something, the more likely you are to put that item back to where it truly belongs, rather than some temporary storage space. If you must place items in front of others, again, make sure that the items in front are the more used items. BUT, in all honesty, double check with yourself that you need all that stuff. A little decluttering will go a long way so as to ensure you don’t have to double up on your storage!
Organized storage spaces lead to organized homes!
