It may not feel like it in some parts of Canada, but where I am, it is starting to feel like spring!
It always puts such a pep in my step when the sun is shining, and I don’t need to layer on five layers just to walk down my driveway!
Whenever I feel the warm sun of spring, it makes me think of being healthy and spending a lot of time outside walking or hiking.
When you’re outside all day, it’s easy to forget about nutrition! So, at this time of year, my favourite thing to stock the freezer with is smoothie kits!
I think that Costco must be feeling the same way because they started selling bags of frozen fruit that have five or six packs of mixed frozen fruit in the big bag! What a perfect way to sell it for smoothies!

I can usually get two smoothies out of each mini bag. (or maybe more depending on how I pad out the rest of the smoothie add ons)
Smoothies almost always taste great – meaning that you can shove a bunch of super healthy ingredients into it without even noticing or having the flavour ruined!
For my freezer add-on smoothie kits, I take a generous cup or two of spinach or kale, a carrot, a banana (especially if they are about to go bad!), and some plain greek yogurt. I also generally add protein powder, collagen peptides, Emergen-C, and sometimes some peanut butter powder. You can add a 1/4 cup of cashews for some more filler, good fats, and even extra protein!

When it’s time to make a smoothie, grab one of those little fruit bags from the Costco bag, one of your own freezer bags, and add 1-2 cups of coconut milk or use these awesome juice box ones also from Costco. (Bonus tip: find the ones that say no sugar added!)

Blitz it all up in your blender and BOOM! You have a delicious smoothie to take with you when you head out on a walk or hike in the fresh air!
Before I found the convenient fruit packs from Costco, I would raid the fridge on garbage night for any fruit that looked like it was too ripe to be consumed out of the fridge. I would make my own smoothie kit out of it all. I would find things like soft but not rotten grapes, old bananas, berries that started to look sad, already cut up cantaloup or watermelon that was in the fridge for a few days, old apples or oranges and always, spinach or kale – even if it is already frozen! Often, I will use up almost expired or just expired yogurt in the bag as well! I would prep it, freeze it, then, whenever the mood struck, I’d toss it into the blender and enjoy!
I have to say, for fruit and veg consumption, I don’t mind forking over a bit more money for convenience to ensure that I will eat the healthy stuff over the easy to grab junk food.
See what kind of smoothie creations you can come up with!
