Bedding, towels, and blankets take up a lot of good real estate in the house. Whether you keep them in a dresser drawer in your room or the linen closet in the hall. A whole closet is a lot of space and makes it very easy to squeeze even more linens into those already jammed spaces!
Make your bed, then go around and collect up your sheets and your pillow cases. Lay them all out on the bed and look them over carefully. Pick out the best two sets for each bed. Get rid of the rest!! You may think you need an extra few sets of sheets, but really, you can launder one while the other is on the bed. If you have a baby who sleeps with you and spits up in the night, you may want a couple extra for those nights that you just can’t do another load of laundry. You may have a toddler who’s potty training and still wetting the bed at night, so you may want a couple extra for that bed. But if the kids are all older, why not get rid of some of that extra clutter!!
Gather all the blankets from everywhere – yes, even the car! And that one by the bed that you love! And even that one on the back of the couch that has become more part of the furniture than a blanket. Decide which rooms need a blanket, keep an extra two total then… you guessed it, get rid of the rest!! There’s just no need to store them all. Have you ever pulled out a blanket to use in front of the TV and found a musty smell because you finally found your older favourite blanket hiding at the bottom of the pile?! Having fewer blankets means you can keep up with washing them and keep them fresh for snuggly, cozy enjoyment!
Don’t stop at the bedding and the blankets! Go through the towels, too! Not just bath towels! Go and find the cleaning towels, the beach towels, and even shop towels and rags! Look for holes or thinning of the towel and get rid of those ones or trade out older stained rags for the newer thinned out towels.
All these kinds of textiles go through a lot of wear and tear (sometimes literally!!) in their lifetime! Keep only a minimum amount. These are the types of things you want to pull out of a closet easily or from a storage basket without tipping the sideways pile over.
The nice thing about decluttering linens is that usually there is no sentimental attachment (ok, blankets may cross the line from time to time!) But it does make it easier to go through them all and get rid of the excess without each decision weighing you down!
