Start with the floor!

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with things around the house and feel like you’re stepping over things more than normal, then stop and commit to vacuuming the floor.

You may think it would be best if you could use some time to declutter first or take the time to put everything away, but who knows how long that will take?!?!

Get the vacuum in your hand!

You’d be surprised by how much quicker you can put things away and clear your stuff when you have a mission to clean underneath!

Take it one room at a time if you don’t have a larger chunk of time. Depending on how much stuff you have out, it could take a couple of hours. But you will amaze yourself with how much you can accomplish!

I recently felt overwhelmed with it all, so much so that I didn’t even document it with pictures. I was so frustrated that I just got started, and before I knew it, it was all done! I even steam mopped!

It started with most of an opening in one main area by the front door. I kept stepping on tiny bits of dried dirt as I stepped around shoes and sports equipment and shopping bags! Before I even moved anything, I pulled out the vacuum. It was the best way to be committed to actually vacuuming!

With my vacuum in one hand and my other hand free to move stuff around. Sometimes, I would have to put the vacuum down to make the most of my speed and hands.

Anything that needed to go upstairs went on the stairs in different piles by category or room. As soon as the pile was big enough to grab with both hands, up it went! Same for stuff to go downstairs. I was up and down so many times I think I trippled my stairs goal on my watch for sure!

I zipped through the main floor, taking about 20 mins per room! Way faster than if I had started by decluttering and tidying each room first. As soon as I was done vacuuming a room, I pulled out the steam mop and mopped the floor of that room right away.

My ambition getting started was just to do the front door area and the kitchen. As I did those spaces, though, I was so happy about it that I decided to add the dining room. Even wiping the chairs down. My dining room leads into a living room which was actually the messiest room (AND the one I was avoiding and even told nyself I was not going to do!) But, when I finished mopping the dining room I could clearly see the line of the side that was done and the side that was not done! And that was just unacceptable!

So, the room I was dreading most was next on the docket! And low and behold, it took me less time than the first area! I was in the mode! I had a system for dealing with stuff quicker, AND truthfully, now I was sweating and just wanted it done!

Because the hard floors felt so tidy and actually clean, I couldn’t help but also vacuum the carpeted areas. The next thing I knew, the whole main floor was done and ready for playing!

Then, I had to get the munchkins from school and see how long my hard work would pay off!

My main point is that next time you feel overwhelmed with your floors, pull out your vacuum and commit to vacuuming the floors!

Just start by picking one room, and then momentum will take you through the rest.

Don’t start with decluttering. Start with vacuuming the floor!

Thanks for coming home!
