As you declutter and get rid of stuff, let yourself off the hook!
Forgive yourself for spending the money in the first place, and get rid of whatever items that are not helping you anymore.
Allow yourself to buy it again, IF (and only if!!) you truly need it again. Don’t bother storing stuff for some day. Doing so will only take up valuable space and take space away from the things you do truly need. Yes, it is a waste of money, but it also is what it is.
Accept that sometimes you need to get rid of stuff, and that means that occasionally, you may get rid of something you might later need. That’s ok. You can let yourself buy it again. The odd time that will actually occur will cost you less than the hassle of storing all of those kinds of items for however long!
Give yourself a great big hug, tell yourself, “It’s ok, you are not broken, and you do not need fixing!” What’s done is done. Pick yourself up, and get started on the hard work of getting rid of stuff.
Forgive yourself!
It’s time to move on. All you can do now is learn and adapt. Getting rid of stuff is a hard job. Getting rid of stuff wastes money. Getting rid of stuff is hard on the environment. Use some time to lock all of this into your memory! Use your experience to think hard about your shopping.
You can’t change the fact that all that stuff got into your home. All you can do now is learn, remember the hard work, and be proud of every choice you make that helps you keep the house the way you want it!
Good luck, work hard, but also be kind to yourself and let the process take time!
