At some point, down the road, hopefully a long time from now, a family member will have to go through every single item in your home!
What are you leaving behind?
It’s so hard to know what others may treasure of your own stuff. What you find thrilling, someone else may not. What you think someone will love, may be another trinket in their home, or they might actually love something else of yours.
Whether it’s you later in life, trying to downsize into a retirement home or long-term care home, or whether it’s family members going through your prized possessions, it takes time!
After being in a home for a long time, you get pretty creative with storage space or hiding things you think are great or even collecting odd things that you love. But it can also mean a lot of nooks and crannies for yourself or others to sort through.
If you’re having a hard time getting rid of some of your clutter, ask yourself how someone else would see the stuff. Would they want to hear a story behind a certain keepsake? Would they bother to pull it out of a box? Would they try to sell it?
Think about your stuff as neutrally as you can!
Take the emotion out of your stuff. Take out the cost that you paid for it. Take out the usefulness that you can put it to. It’s all just stuff.
Try as much as you can to always pair down your stuff. It could save a lot of hassle for you and your family! Whether it becomes a time of heartache, an unwanted move, or even an exciting move! The whole process will be easier the more you get rid of over the years!
It always comes down to a little bit at a time! Anyone can handle anything just a little at a time.
