Use those cherished items!!
Relish in the thrill of using those expensive crystal glasses or that fine China! Take ribbons, medals, and trophies out of storage and set them up on a shelf in a workout area! Show off that expensive jewellery!
If you already own all this amazing stuff, use it! Don’t shove it in a box somewhere in the basement or garage.
Ok, so, yes, it sucks when something that is expensive gets lost or breaks! (especially, if it’s too expensive to replace) But, at least if you are using it, you are creating memories with it. You are actually enjoying it! When it breaks, you are just creating a mis-mory! (You can read about my awesome new word in the post!)
I have some very fancy crystal wine, martini, and high-ball glasses that I got as a wedding gift. I love them so much! The pattern is a Vera-Wang pattern that almost looks like delicate stripes coming from the bottom and tapering off at the midpoint of the glasses. They make me smile every time I look at them because of how pretty they are, even if there’s just water in them. We store a couple of the wine glasses in the dining room cabinet, and the rest of them we protect downstairs so they won’t break. I love being able to pull them out, but I even love just using them for a regular dinner. The specialness of them is not lost even if I use it every single night! So why keep them tucked away and protected?? Then I wouldn’t get to smile as often as I take that first sip of whatever is poured into them!
It’s funny the way we are with our stuff. The more precious or expensive an item is, the less we use it. And yet, when we do use it, we get even more enjoyment out of it. We may even sometimes forget about it when it’s in storage! Or worse, it breaks in storage, we pull it out to use it for a fancy occasion and find it broken!!! How awful, then you never really got a chance to use it and enjoy it!
When you’re tucking your stuff into storage, really think about what you’re storing and why. Think about the way you want to use your fancy things! Think about whether or not it’s worth keeping your fancy things in storage or simply keeping them handy or on display so you can use it, or at the very least, you can talk about it!
Sure, it may shorten their lifespan keeping your fancy things in a daily rotation, but then at least you get to use them and enjoy them.
Another option, crazy as it may be, is to sell your fancy things! Sometimes, we are gifted very expensive, high-end things, and that alone guilts us into keeping it or finding somewhere to store it. Just because you have something, it does not mean that you HAVE to keep it. Giving or selling it to someone you know will love it, will possibly add more years to whatever the item is. If you don’t truly love it or cherish it, you may not treat it the same as someone who does, and therefore, it might be more likely to end up damaged in your care.
Whatever you decide to do with your fancy things is up to you. But I do strongly encourage you to just use it and enjoy it. There’s no sense in having it if it stays in a box somewhere amongst the clutter!
