When working on decluttering a specific space or room, look around and find the biggest items or the biggest category of items.
Start with all the biggest things.
So, when you are looking at a particularly cluttered area of your home and it’s making you feel overwhelmed, take a step back. Look for the biggest items in the cluttered mess. If you can focus on getting rid of or at least properly putting away the biggest items, it will instantly make you feel like you’ve accomplished something HUGE! The room will almost instantly feel less cluttered! That will give you the motivation to focus on the next step where size matters…
Dive into the biggest category
Make a mental list of some of the items in your cluttered space. Pull out items from whatever the biggest category is, meaning whatever category of stuff has the most stuff in it. It could be categories like paper, clothing (yes, even at the front door!), kids’ toys, or craft stuff. Tackle the category until every item that belongs in that category has been dealt with. This is another way to get a big impact for a bit of effort.
If you can continue to divide the pile into categories and continue focusing on the next biggest category, your pile, room, shelf, or drawer may be done before you know it. The big impact stuff has a profound effect on your ability to keep pushing through. It gives you motivation because you can constantly see big change with each category of items that gets put away or dealt with.
Any time that you are trying to really declutter, always remember that size really does matter. If need be, start with furniture. It’s amazing how getting rid of furniture or just moving it around changes the whole feeling in the room. You don’t need to stick with what has always been, branch out, and try change! Try something different or something new!
