Make a decluttering rotation schedule

Rotate your declutter zones to ensure you get all over your house with a keen eye in a single month!

For example

Week 1: Main Floor
Monday – Front hall and stairs
Tuesday – Kitchen
Wednesday – Family room
Thursday – Dining room
Friday – Laundry room

Week 2: Upstairs
Monday – Bedrooms
Tuesday – Bathrooms
Wednesday – Hallway
Thursday – Clothes
Friday – Bedrooms (yes, it’s on there twice, especially for kids!)

Week 3: Basement
Monday – Living/entertainment area
Tuesday – Storage
Wednesday – Workshop
Thursday – Pantry or extra freezer/fridge
Friday – Home office

Week 4: Garage and outside
Monday – Garage
Wednesday – Outside
Friday – Car
(You could use the other days during this week to touch on some sore spots or particularly cluttered areas)

Following a decluttering rotation takes some of the decision making out of your process. It allows you to keep a closer eye on the specific area throughout the day so that you can still live your life and also get some stuff out of your home!

The above example is what works for me, but you could change it to suit the rooms or spaces in your house or even the zones that you use to segment your house. If you have a very open concept house, you may want to consider breaking down the space into multiple zones so that you can focus on smaller chunks of space at a time.

Keep in mind that you do not need to declutter the entire space in each area in a single day. It just helps you focus. Use your timer to help you set time limits on your decluttering effort. I always say, a quick 10 minute blitz often makes a big difference. Even if you simply declutter one shelf or drawer in each space, you will be better off than not doing it out of paralysis of where to start. By the end of the year, you will have touched on 12 areas of each room or space! That’s pretty huge when it comes to getting rid of stuff you no longer need in your home!

With practice and patience, your home will become yours again!

Thanks for coming home!
