Figuring out why you want to declutter is one thing, I explain what you can do to figure out your why when you really want to get to the bottom of that clutter pile in a post from a couple of years ago, Declutter your life: The ‘expanded’ WHY!
But the real why, that you might not have thought about trying to figure out is why you have the clutter that you have!
Figuring out why you want to declutter is great to fire up your motivation, but figuring out why you have the stuff that you have can let you finally set yourself free of it!
Think about the areas that are most cluttered in your life…
Is it your closet? Why do you have so many clothes or so many shoes? Is it because your weight fluctuates? Is it because you haven’t found your style yet? Is it because you love a good bargain? Is it because you are holding onto memories through your wardrobe? Is it because you have a hobby like camping that needs more specialized clothing that you don’t wear everyday? Why do you have so much?? Ask yourself these questions. Ask yourself why you truly ‘need’ so many clothes. Maybe you can finally figure out what is making you feel stuck in keeping it all! Are you afraid you will have to wear the same thing over and over?
Is it kids’ toys? Why are you keeping them? Do you plan on fixing them? Does it remind you of when the kids were younger? Are you hoping to gift them to a friend when they finally have children of their own? Why keep it??
Is it office supplies or papers? Are you keeping them for taxes? As keepsakes? Why do you have office supplies? What do you use the supplies for? Do you even ever consider using them??
As you stumble on a big category of clutter in your home, ask yourself why you are keeping these items. If you can figure out why you’re keeping it or realize that you dont actually need it, then you can probably figure out a way to justify getting rid of it! Especially if those cluttered areas are causing crazy headaches and frustrations around the ease of use of your stuff and your home.
Not only is it important to figure out why you want a clean, tidy, clutter free home, but you also need to figure out why you are actually keeping the stuff you are keeping! It will help you get rid of some of that clutter and live with more purpose and focus on what you really want from your life!
