Why be a parent anyway??

People always share horror stories about having kids. It starts right when people find out you’re pregnant! Then, you have the baby, and people can’t help but threaten ‘no more sleep’ or ‘no more relationship’ or even ‘no more fun!’ Some joke about sending the kids back or giving them away. Others seem totally disinterested in their own kids!

Personally, I love being a mom. You get to experience your life through a tiny person that you created. Yes, there are things that happen that I don’t like and things that I love – just like with ANYTHING in life!

The most rewarding part is watching them become independent living humans! You can try your best to shape them or pass on knowledge for at least a little while!

But, no matter how much you nudge them the way you think is right, they will still become their own person, have their own stories to share, and have their own thoughts (even about whether the parents were/are right or wrong!) They will figure out their own interests.

You get to continually learn alongside them! The learning and teaching is a two-way street. They are learning from me, and I get to learn from them!

They inspire me to become a better me….no…

They challenge me to become a better me!

No matter how much I want to protect them or help them, no matter how much I want to share my experience with them, the best part of being a parent is letting them be free to find their own interests, to let them discover themselves.

That’s why I became a mom! To let these little people be themselves, not let them be who I think they should be! That’s the payoff. Of course, it doesn’t happen right away, but slowly, over time, they become themselves! I just get to be on the sidelines, cheering them on like a maniac!! I’ll take that win!

How about you? Why did you become a parent? Share in the comments below!

Thanks for coming home!

  1. Parenting is the hardest most responsible job, but the reward is the greatest and well worth the difficult bits.

  2. I also like being a mom. It’s definitely challenging but also makes my life so full. It’s a great adventure. I still joke with others about the euphoria of alone time, but that’s because I’m not great with boundaries which my children have helped me develop. Like you, they challenged me to be a better version of myself.

    • It is a great adventure indeed! Everyday is unique in the challenges or rewards that are offered by having kids! I do dream of alone time too, but sometimes when I get it, I spend most of the time missing the kids or wondering what they are up to. Funny how it works! Enjoy your adventure! Thanks for sharing.
