If you have ever gone through a big purge (read about our purge in a previous post), it can be so satisfying! I mean, it usually ends in a drastic change if you’ve really taken it seriously!
To do it right, you gotta go through EVERY inch! Look at EVERY item in your home AND work super hard with your own mental struggles about getting rid of your stuff! If you do all of that, you will ensure that a lot of your stuff is gone when you’re done!
Most of the time, after doing a big house purge, stuff slowly creeps back in, and you may be left feeling overwhelmed again. You may find yourself tempted to keep stuff or put more things in your storage space! It seems so empty! Or worse, you may be tempted to buy stuff that you then have to store! One way to fix the rebound accumulation of stuff all over again is to cut your storage space down!
If you have worked really hard through a big purge and getting rid of stuff, you kinda want to keep it that way, right?! I mean, why do the work, if you don’t really want the reward? But, you’ve just freed up a ton of space, and that also means that you likely freed up a ton of storage space!
If you have or are doing a big purge, think about using your storage space differently when you are done!!
Anywhere that you have storage, try to eliminate a shelf or even remove a whole shelf unit! Keeping your storage the same as when you had ALL of your stuff means that you are eventually going to fill it. Where there is empty space, there will eventually be stuff!
If you decide to keep your shelves or can’t get rid of them for whatever reason, a trick is to change your storage tactic.
Embrace the empty space!
Here’s a few ways to use your new/smaller, limited storage space:
- Put single large items on a single shelf!
- Don’t put anything on top of anything else!
- Don’t put anything in front of anything else!
- Use smaller boxes to categorize your stuff (they take up more overall shelf space so that you store less!)
Cutting down on your storage space means that you need to think more critically about any new things that you buy. If you can limit what you bring into the house, you will have an easier time keeping up with your new storage system, and as a result, will keep up with clutter with a sense of peace!
Limiting the space inevitably has to limit the stuff! It’s only logical, right??

Love those 4 tips. I’m trying to do that and it certainly makes life easier.
