Ahh, the old adage of practice makes perfect! It’s a hard sentiment to enforce. Practicing sucks and nothing is ever really perfect!
We encourage our kids to practice, but how do we practice? How do we teach them to practice?
Pick out some family habits and practice them all together. It can be chores, conversations, homework planning, pet training, or even some family fun on the weekend! If a family member is busy one night, make sure there is emphasis on the others doing the work anyway or filling in the gap.
It all has to get done!
It’s how we can teach the importance of being a team. The work should be split between the family, and that means the slack needs to be ironed out no matter who is home.
Tracking the habits can be a fun visual for the kids to push harder to hit the family targets.
We can show the kids that even if we practice, it still won’t be perfect.
We can teach them that consistency really does pay off.
We can demonstrate that sometimes in life, you have to work hard even when you don’t want to!
Use the new year to open up some conversations with the kids about habits and tracking progress. Use a habit tracking app, print out a printable from an internet search, or just use a notepad for your progress!
Make this year about sticking together and working hard as a family.
Set some family goals and get closer to achieving them by tracking your habits and trying to practice a bit every day!
