The closet easily gets overwhelming!

Ok, I admit it! Sometimes I am a TAD of a “I’ll just toss that in here and deal with it later” kind of tidier!

But, it never fails to come back and haunt me!

This closet for example…

I don’t know why I just throw stuff in here! Ok, I do!! It’s shopping, then kids home from school, then dinner, then sports etc, then the dog, then sleep, then appointments, then work, then repeat. It gets a little crazy sometimes!

The biggest problem is that sorting these closets becomes a sore spot, both on my mental health and on my desire to actually sort it! It becomes a mountain each and every time I don’t put things away in their proper space and instead shortcut to toss stuff in this closet.

No matter what, your house and your stuff are kind of like being a parent. You’re never really ‘off the clock!’ When you have kids, you never really have a night off. You never know if they’ll call with some kind of emergency or wake up in the night with scary dreams. You never really know if they’ll call home from school or wake up sick. Sure, you can make plans as a parent based on what the expectation is, but it can change on a dime!

The house is kind of the same. You never really have a night off because it means something is getting neglected. It may be laundry, the dishwasher, or even cleaning up after a game night. Putting stuff away is kind of like feeding the kids. You turn your back, and you find them eating something else or asking for more food or making a bigger mess. You turn your back on the house, and it feels like a tornado went through. Sometimes even just by having the kids enter the house!

Needless to say, maintaining the house and the clutter is huge! Making an effort to get rid of things as new things come into the house creates an easier to manage balance. Or, making an effort to sort through places you know you don’t want to, creates more space and peace in your mind. Whether you admit it or not, it weighs on you, knowing that the closet is messy. Maybe it has organized chaos, but it still needs eyes on the stuff once in a while!

So the top shelf in my closet stayed the same, but the rest of it got a face lift, and even the bins got sorted. They keep secret gifts in them for my own family, so I can’t share what’s inside! But, I assure you, they are now easier to use, and my brain has been reminded of their content for upcoming birthdays and holidays!

I also secretly LOVE seeing the floor! The same is true for table tops. A few times in the recent past, I have said to the kids that “I kind of want to just sell all of our furniture!” They look at me cock-eyed, and then we smile at each other because they assume I’m joking, but it’s still a distant dream of mine!

Take your time and go hunt down some of those deep closets that store your secrets and let them out! Declutter them! And reset the space to make it easier to use!

Thanks for coming home!
