Trade the “Cheap” for the “Real”: How to Give Yourself What You Actually Crave

We’ve all been there. You finally get a free hour in your day. You’re tired, so you sit on the couch, open your phone, and start scrolling. Before you know it, forty-five minutes have vanished. You haven’t rested, you haven’t learned anything, and you don’t feel refreshed. In fact, you feel a little bit emptier than you did before, right??

That is the trap of “cheap” dopamine.

It’s quick, it’s low-commitment, and it promises instant gratification. But just like cheap fast food, it leaves you starved for actual nourishment. Today, I want to challenge us to stop settling for the cheap stuff. It’s time to give yourself real!

Cheap vs. Real: What’s the Difference?

This isn’t about the stuff in your house; it’s about how you spend your energy, your time, and your life. When you look at your day, try filtering your choices through this lens: The “Cheap” choice vs. the “Real” choice.

The cheap, quick and fake option would be mindlessly scrolling through other people’s lives on a screen. The real, more present and true options could be going for a walk, feeling the sun on your skin, or looking at the actual view outside your window.

A cheap, low commitment option is to leave a mess or a project piled up because it’s easier to ignore it right now. The real, more fulfilling option is to spend 10 minutes actually clearing a space so you can sit down and really enjoy a hobby.

A cheap, instant gratification option could be binge watching a show you don’t even like just to pass the time. The real, true satisfaction might come from diving into an experience, a book, a creative project or even just having a conversation that lifts you up.

How to Treat Yourself Right with “Real”

Let’s save the fake, cheap distractions for someone else. You deserve better than the filler.

Here are three simple ways to start trading up for the real things in life:

Audit your “Rewards”

When you finish a hard task, don’t reward yourself with ten minutes of mindless phone scrolling. Treat yourself to a real reward—a hot cup of tea without your phone, five minutes of listening to your favorite song, or stepping outside for fresh air.

Chasing Experiences over Distractions

“Real” lives in experiences and taking advantage of the opportunities right in front of you. It’s choosing to bake the recipe, plan the day trip, or sit around a campfire with people you love, rather than letting the day slip away into a cloud of screen time.

Protect Your Time

Time is the most valuable, un-cluttered thing you own. When you actively choose “real” feelings and “real” satisfaction, you are protecting that time from being stolen by things that don’t matter to you.

Decluttering isn’t just about clearing out old boxes! It’s about clearing out the noise so you have room for what is authentic. Treat yourself right. Put down the cheap distractions, step into the real world, and give yourself the true satisfaction you actually crave today.
