Let’s face it. Life is unpredictable, to say the least. You never really know what is going to happen next. Sometimes you can simply pivot and life goes on relatively unchanged. What about the events that force you to stop in your tracks, or the changes that have a bigger impact on your normal routine. Whether it’s moving in with your partner, or having babies, or getting a new pet, or even tragic things like an accident, or illness or even the death of a loved one. These big events force you to examine the way things were and make you think about moving forward.
So, now what?
No matter what the event is, it’s an opportunity to look at your life and concentrate on what was working and what was not working.
Maybe it’s time to re-prioritize.
Do some soul searching and decide what the new priorities are. What are the new most valuable ways to spend your time?
We have all had a bit of practice with some major upheaval in our lives, you know, with the global pandemic and all. So many lives will be forever impacted. We can’t help but value the lessons and soul searching that the pandemic has brought about in terms of re-prioritizing what really matters.
Maybe it’s time to start a new hobby, or take a special interest course, or repaint the house, or join a walking group in your neighbourhood, or even start organizing those places in your life that are going haywire! No matter what, any big life changing event means big changes – whether you are ready for them or not.
Try these steps when facing big life changes:
Determine the daily bare minimum
Figure out what the minimum requirements are for getting through the day. If you’re a new homeowner, maybe it’s simply unpacking one box, or picking a room to set up. If you just had a baby, maybe the minimum is feeding the baby and changing poopy diapers right away – that could be it for the absolute bare minimum. Maybe it’s just going through the motions of a busy family – ensure the kids get here or there on time, and ensure there is food in the house. Whatever your bare minimum is; think small.
Pick two bonuses each day
Find two things that you want to accomplish during the day. Again, it’s about aiming small. These are things that would make you feel like you’ve got this! Maybe it’s cleaning a toilet, or vacuuming. It could even be getting out for a jog, or a drive. It could be as small or as big as you can handle, but it is meant to be something that makes you feel good!
One goal for the week
Think about one larger goal to focus on throughout the week. Any time you have during each day, work a little bit more toward that goal. Pick something you really want to do or work on something that’s weighing you down. Whatever it is, imagine that when it’s done, it makes you feel like you conquered whatever it was.
Following these steps week by week will help you feel more accomplished after those big life changes. Before you know it, you will have grounded yourself on your new path. The idea of starting small is that it is so easy to be hard on yourself about your success or progress, or where you hope to be vs. where you are. It’s easier to imagine getting everything done super fast and not really think about how much time passes as you get through your day. This is a guilt free, no hard feelings way of getting through that first while after a big life change.
